Silica gel in shrimp

Shrimp is one of the most popular and cherished foods in Bangladesh. However, recent reports of unscrupulous traders injecting a harmful gel-like substance into shrimp to increase their weight and enhance their appearance are deeply alarming. Raids conducted by the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection have exposed this unethical and dangerous practice, which poses a serious threat to public health.

According to health experts, such synthetic substances are not intended for human consumption. Regular intake may lead to serious health complications, including kidney damage and other life-threatening illnesses. Food adulteration is not merely an act of fraud; it is a grave crime that endangers the health and well-being of the nation.

The authorities must therefore strengthen market surveillance, conduct regular inspections, and ensure exemplary punishment for those involved in such criminal activities, including the masterminds behind these syndicates. At the same time, consumers should remain vigilant and purchase seafood only from trusted sources.
