Simplify NID correction
May 07, 2025 00:00:00
The process of correcting national identity (NID) cards has become a major source of frustration for citizens. For even the most minor updates-such as spelling of name, date of birth, or address-people are often compelled to make multiple visits to the Election Office, navigating layers of confusing paperwork, unclear instructions, and poor management.
While an online portal exists for NID services, its functionality leaves much to be desired. Frequent server issues, login failures, slow performance, and a non-intuitive interface have made the digital process equally burdensome. Consequently, many are forced to turn to brokers, risking financial exploitation and the potential for fraudulent activity.
This crisis is even more pronounced in rural areas, where limited internet access, low digital literacy and the need to travel long distances make the service nearly unreachable. The result is not just wasted time and resources, but a violation of citizens' basic rights and dignity.
To address this, urgent reform is necessary. The national ID correction system must be made simpler, more transparent, and truly digital. A user-friendly online platform, reliable server infrastructure, mobile app-based services, and the establishment of local service centres would enable citizens to complete corrections efficiently and independently.
The Election Commission and other authorities concerned must take immediate and concrete steps toward improving the system. The right to accurate and accessible identification is fundamental and must not be compromised by bureaucratic inefficiency.
