Recently, two women were attacked by a mob, allegedly for smoking in a public place at Lalmatia in the capital. According to the police, the two female students were harassed for smoking in the area, and they were later rescued from the spot. Meanwhile, the home affairs adviser made a statement asserting that smoking in public is prohibited for both men and women, which sparked a wave of criticism on social media, with some even calling for his resignation over his comments.
It is well known that smoking in public places is prohibited for both men and women, and this rule must be followed by all. Smoking is detrimental to health, and scientists have linked it to many serious illnesses such as cancer, heart disease, liver damage, and bronchitis. The treatment for these smoking-related diseases is often costly and severe. Smokers are well aware of the harmful effects, as every cigarette pack carries a mandatory warning that reads, "Smoking is detrimental to health," in line with the World Health Organization (WHO) regulations.
Furthermore, those who are near smokers are equally at risk, as passive smoking can cause similar acute diseases. This highlights that smoking in public is not just a personal choice; it can adversely affect the health of others.
The government has strict laws in place that prohibit smoking in public spaces, with penalties for violators. However, we continue to see some individuals smoking openly in buses, trains, public fields, markets, shopping malls, and other public spaces, showing a complete disregard for those around them. It is especially disturbing when smokers exhale harmful smoke in areas where people are forced to breathe it in.
In many cases, when politely asked to refrain from smoking in public, these individuals respond with arrogance, as if their actions have no consequences. Smokers must realise that smoking in public is not a right, but rather a harmful habit that should be confined to designated smoking areas or indoors, away from the general public. It is essential that smokers exercise common sense and respect for others.
Let us all work together to create a healthier environment by respecting the laws and considering the well-being of those around us.
