Social media's impact on mental health
February 10, 2025 00:00:00
Modern society relies heavily on social media for global connectivity, instant communication, knowledge sharing, and entertainment. However, its excessive use poses significant challenges to mental health. Overuse of social media can contribute to anxiety and depression, leading individuals to feel worse about themselves. The continuous exposure to carefully curated lifestyles and unrealistic beauty standards fosters unhealthy self-comparisons and negative self-judgment.
Young users, in particular, experience heightened emotional stress due to cyberbullying and online harassment. Additionally, social media addiction adversely affects sleep quality, reduces productivity, and weakens real-life interpersonal connections. The relentless pursuit of likes and validation increases emotional pressure, ultimately diminishing self-worth.
To safeguard mental well-being, individuals should adopt a judicious approach to social media use by managing screen time, engaging with positive content, and prioritising face-to-face relationships. Maintaining a balanced approach to social media can maximise its benefits while mitigating its drawbacks.
