Steps to stop river erosion

September 04, 2021 00:00:00

River erosion is not a new thing for us. It has been happening almost every year and taking away many people's homesteads and croplands. Sometimes, we lose our educational institutions. Sometimes, it is our religious institution or our ancestors' burial ground. Hundreds of people become erosion victims each year. But only a handful steps are taken to stop this.

According to a survey, around five per cent of the total floodplains in Bangladesh are directly affected by river erosion. Erosion, according to experts, is taking place in about 94 out of 495 upazilas of our country. At present, river erosion and floods have reportedly become a regular occurrence in more than 100 upazilas.

To save our people from river erosion, we should build a strong embankment where necessary. We urge the authorities concerned to take some instant and long-term measures so that we can check this erosion for good.
