Stop common room culture
June 27, 2025 00:00:00
The so-called "common room culture" in public universities has long been a deeply troubling issue. In these common rooms, which are meant for two or three students, are crammed with eight to ten individuals, making it nearly impossible to study or rest. Basic facilities such as sanitation, ventilation, and personal space are grossly inadequate, creating conditions worse than urban slums.
Beyond the physical discomfort, this overcrowding fosters social unrest. Tensions rise easily in such tight quarters, leading to constant arguments, group rivalries and even violent clashes. The lack of privacy and dignity erodes mutual respect and breeds psychological stress. As a result, academic focus is lost, and students suffer silently.
This practice is not only a violation of students' rights to a safe and healthy learning environment, but it also tarnishes the reputation of public universities. The time has come for university administrations, particularly newly appointed leaderships, to take decisive steps and dismantle the common room culture to ensure dignity and a sound academic environment for students.
