Stop road digging during monsoon

June 19, 2021 00:00:00

UK-based organisation Economist Intelligence Unit's Global Liveability Index has recently ranked Dhaka as the fourth least liveable city in the world. And, it did not come as a surprise for its residents because they live here with numerous problems. However, the situation turns into a nightmare for them during the rainy season. Almost all roads of the city get flooded even with a little shower, contributing to untold sufferings of people. And the main reason behind this is unplanned road digging during the rainy season. With the commencement of every monsoon, the street digging competition between different agencies begins. The traditional practice of digging of roads and sewage line cleaning programmes at these times make the situation worse for Dhaka city dwellers.

The streets across the whole city have now been turned into a digging field for so-called development works. Why do the authorities concerned lay underground pipes or dig roads during the monsoon? We expect a planned coordination between the agencies and city corporation authorities for road digging. And the entire work should be done preferably by the same party. Above all, development projects ought to be taken up only during dry seasons.
