Struggles of stone workers in Panchagarh

The quarrying of stones from the Karatoa River in Mirgarh village, Tentulia upazila of Panchagarh, is a crucial part of the local economy. Various types of stones are carried downstream by the river's current, while the unique soil composition of the region

contributes to stone formation.

The lives and livelihoods of many residents depend on this arduous work.

However, the situation for these workers is far from ideal. Most earn a daily wage of just Tk 500, an amount insufficient to meet the basic needs of their families. Despite the biting cold of winter, they venture into the river to collect stones.

The physically demanding tasks of stone collection and breaking have taken a severe toll on their health,

causing ailments such as respiratory issues, chronic colds and even life-threatening silicosis.

Unfortunately, these workers report inadequate access to medical care and a lack of government support. Their demands are simple but urgent.

All they demand are fair wages that reflect the hard work they do and access to proper medical facilities.

It is imperative for the government, local

administration, and stone industry owners to address these concerns promptly.
