Syndicate in Jamdani-sari trade
May 05, 2025 12:00:00
Jamdani saris, meticulously handwoven by traditional artisans, are not just garments - they are embodiments of Bengal's cultural legacy. Every sari carries the invisible threads of labour, passion, and centuries-old craftsmanship. Yet, the very hands that create these masterpieces are denied the value they deserve.
A powerful syndicate of middlemen and resellers dominates the Jamdani trade, purchasing saris from weavers at low rates and selling them at astronomical prices. This exploitative chain not only robs the artisans of fair earnings but also demeans the dignity of their labour.
In recent times, many weavers have taken courageous steps to reach consumers directly, offering their products at fair and affordable prices. However, their efforts are often thwarted by harassment and unethical resistance from entrenched shop owners and middlemen determined to maintain control.
Jamdani is more than a product-it is a symbol of our heritage and pride. To preserve this, we must first empower and protect the weavers. The current syndicate is not just an economic injustice; it is a profound moral failure. Ensuring fair pricing and market access is not only an economic imperative but also a matter of justice.
