LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
The death of deep reading
July 01, 2025 00:00:00
In recent years, our lives have been significantly dominated by social media scrolls and 10 - 15-second videos. Our attention spans are shrinking every day, and with them, our ability to engage with thoughtful, long-form content. Instead of books or articles, we are now consuming information in bite-sized, flashy formats for instant gratification.
This shift isn't just a cultural trend; it's a crisis for critical thinking. When this shallow content becomes the norm, context and informed perspectives suffer. This decline in reading habits particularly impacts our younger generations. They are growing up in an environment where scrolling replaces reflection.
As writers and content creators, we have a responsibility in this situation. We have to resist the pressure to oversimplify and instead advocate for substance. Thoughtful writing, whether in the form of blogs, editorials, or even social media posts, still has the power to spark change, inform the public, and preserve intellectual curiosity.
If we can encourage meaningful content creation and rekindle the love of reading, we can shape a smarter, more thoughtful generation. The future of writing shouldn't be about speed, it should be mindful.
