The high cost of housing in Dhaka

October 09, 2018 00:00:00

Most of the Dhaka city-dwellers are living in rented houses and one-third or more of their monthly income is spent on it. The house rent is increasing many people find it difficult to survive. If the government takes the initiative and builds apartments for those people who have no house in Dhaka with small monthly installment, then some of the problems will be lessened.

Banks are thought to have much idle fund, which can be utilised here. We can also take low-interest loan from our development partners so that we can solve the acute housing problem. Dhaka is a megacity of 16 million people and the number of its dwellers is continuously rising. If we do not take long-term plan, then we will face a serious crisis in the future. The housing problem is a big one in the city and with each passing day, we see the rent of houses going higher.

I have been living and working in Dhaka for long, but still cannot manage to own a place for myself and there are many people like me who have no chance to own a house if the government does not take steps.
