Violence against children

January 12, 2018 00:00:00

A RECENT report released by a non-government organisation reveals that violence against children has risen significantly in the country.

The report published by the Bangladesh Shishu Adhikar Forum (BSAF), said child rights violation rose by 7.13 per cent in 2017 compared to that of the previous year. It also cited that 593 children were raped and 339 killed - a rise by 33 per cent and 28 per cent respectively.

This is no doubt alarming as it shows that despite the rise in allocation for different ministries which are engaged in children's welfare, the scenario is bleak.

At present children constitute 45 per cent of the country's total population and they are the future leaders of the nation. So it is imperative to do the needful for their mental and physical development.

On the other hand, a huge number of cases of child rights violation remain pending with different courts of the country. If exemplary punishment cannot be ensured for the perpetrators through quick disposal of the cases, the situation would not improve.

Let us hope that the authorities will take proper measures to dispose of the cases immediately.
