Wearing helmets a must for cyclists

Ridwan Quaium | January 22, 2014 00:00:00

Cyclists in our country in the past hardly ever wore helmet or other safety gears such as gloves, knee guard, elbow guard etc. while cycling. This is mainly because the concept of helmet and safety gears was non-existent for cyclists in the past. However, cyclists nowadays are seen to be cycling wearing helmet and other safety gears. Naturally, many people wonder why cyclists nowadays wear helmet and other safety gears.

Compared to even a decade ago, the traffic volume in Dhaka has increased significantly. Drivers drive much more aggressively and recklessly these days. To make matters worse, many of them are not even properly trained and have hardly any knowledge about traffic rules and regulations. All these make cycling in Dhaka a much tougher task than ever before. The reckless, aggressive, intolerant and impatient driving behaviour can cause serious accidents at any moment. This is why cyclists nowadays have to be much more careful and take precautions as much as possible when cycling in Dhaka compared to anytime in the past.

One of the ways to be careful and to take precaution is to ensure that in the event of an accident the injury they incur is minimal or minimised. In any cycle-related crash, cyclists generally first get hit in the head, hand, knee and elbow. In fact, head injury is a common type of injury associated with bicycle accidents, which may even be fatal. Severity of injury to the head can be reduced through the use of helmets because during an accident if the head hits an object or the ground, the helmet absorbs the energy of the impact. Thus it reduces impact on the head and reduce the severity of the injury. This is why it is absolutely necessary for cyclists to wear helmets. They should also be advised to buy these from well-known brands as such helmets perform better. While purchasing helmets, cyclists have to ensure that it fits their heads perfectly.

During a bicycle accident, when a cyclist falls down, generally their hand touches the ground. This may result in scraping skin from their palm. This is quite painful. Depending on the severity of the injury, it may even take quite some time to heal off completely. To prevent this from happening, cyclists should wear good quality gloves, which will keep them comfortable, provide them a good grip and also keep their palm safe. This is why besides helmet, gloves are also very essential.

Other than helmet and gloves, cyclists may also consider buying knee guard, elbow guard and padded shorts.

Therefore, to be safe as much as possible, it is important for cyclists nowadays to wear helmet and other safety gears. In addition, they should also follow the traffic rules and regulation and ride as safely as possible.
