LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Where is our security?

February 28, 2025 00:00:00

The security situation in the nation's capital, Dhaka, as well as in other regions, has worsened recently. It has become almost a daily occurrence for criminals to swoop on moving vehicles to loot their valuables. Ordinary people are, therefore, constantly in fear.

Women, in particular, are experiencing extreme insecurity.

They face harassment in various forms, whether they are walking the streets, using public transportation, or returning home late from work. Theft, robbery, and violence are on the rise, not only in urban areas but also in rural setting.

A student in Mirpur suffered serious injuries from muggers a few days ago. During the day, people are being robbed in areas like Uttara, Badda, and Malibagh. Those who try to resist often end up facing guns. The surge in criminal activity and the increasing use of weapons have made people feel more insecure than ever.

There has also been a rise in burglaries and home invasions. Recently, the residents of a house in Narayanganj were taken hostage by a group of criminals who burst into it and stole their belongings. These criminals often do more than steal-they also threaten and physically harm the residents.

Every person has a fundamental right to security. But as muggings, robberies, and violent crimes continue to rise, people are becoming increasingly concerned with their security.

The government must act immediately to ensure that people feel safe on the streets and at home. Otherwise, our society will become even more unstable due to this growing insecurity.
