Women empowerment for sustainable development

June 21, 2025 00:00:00

With over half the population and nearly half of all women under the age of 30, the country's demographic profile presents tremendous untapped opportunities. This youthful population, if effectively engaged, can become the driving force behind Bangladesh's journey towards sustainable development. Various initiatives are there to help women and youth contribute meaningfully to economic and social change, especially in areas such as technology, e-commerce, agriculture, and social entrepreneurship. Start-ups led by women and young innovators are transforming the landscape, while rural women are gaining economic independence through microfinance schemes and participation in digital platforms. Digitally skilled youth are also contributing to the global digital economy by offering technology solutions and freelancing services that generate foreign income.

The National Youth Policy and support from the SME Foundation have played key roles in promoting skills development, providing financial support, and increasing entrepreneurial opportunities. Additionally, government-led initiatives like Digital Bangladesh Vision 2041 are laying the groundwork for inclusive digital literacy and job creation. Institutions like Grameen Bank, BRAC, and the JAAGO Foundation have also stepped in to empower aspiring entrepreneurs and challenge traditional mindsets, enabling people from all backgrounds to pursue their ambitions. These organisations not only offer funding and training but also foster confidence and leadership among marginalised communities.

Despite these advances, challenges remain. Cultural barriers, limited access to funding, lack of technological infrastructure, and inadequate mentorship still hinder progress, especially for rural youth who face skill gaps and household responsibilities that prevent them from entering industrial sectors. Many women also continue to encounter gender-based discrimination in accessing credit, land ownership, or leadership roles.

For sustainable empowerment, it is essential to bridge the rural-urban divide, ensure access to resources for all, and enhance digital and technical capabilities. Policymakers, educators, and industry leaders must work together to create an ecosystem that supports innovation and inclusion at every level. The aim should be to empower everyone, regardless of gender or location, to lead and innovate, leveraging the country's vibrant youth population to its full potential.
