Workers' rights in crisis
April 30, 2025 00:00:00
May Day, observed worldwide, is a day dedicated to workers' rights and international solidarity. It serves as an eternal inspiration for all working people across the globe. However, the workers who struggle under the scorching sun, whose efforts build civilisations, remain largely forgotten. Their voices are often unheard despite their significant contributions to society.
In 1886, workers in Chicago took to the streets demanding an 8-hour workday.
In 1889, at the International Labour Conference in Paris, May 1st was officially declared as Workers' Day. Now it's International Workers' Day. Sadly, even 133 years later, workers in Bangladesh remain deprived of their basic rights. Workers in the informal sector are particularly vulnerable, without proper legal protections, fair wages, safe working conditions, or social security.
The 2024 protests have marked a turning point, as workers and students united to demand changes. This new chapter in the workers' movement has shown that collective action can reshape the nation's political and economic landscape.
For Bangladesh to advance, we must ensure workers' rights, eliminate inequalities, and respect their contributions. The time for action is now - to unite and fight for the rights of workers, who are the true foundation of our society.
