Zakat as charity

March 16, 2025 00:00:00

Islam has made Zakat obligatory to safeguard the rights of the poor and establish social justice. In Islamic economics, there are clear guidelines for wealth distribution, ensuring economic balance through Zakat. The Holy Qur'an states, "Wealth should not be circulated only among your rich" (Surah Al-Hashr, verse 7) and "In their (the rich people's) wealth, there is certainly the right of the destitute and the deprived" (Surah Al-Jariyat, verse 19). Zakat is one of the fundamental pillars of Islam, ranking in importance right after faith (Iman) and prayer (Salat). The Qur'an repeatedly emphasizes the significance of Zakat, promising divine blessings, mercy, and self-purification to those who fulfill this duty.

Some may question how giving Zakat, which seemingly reduces wealth, can actually lead to its increase. However, Zakat purifies wealth and secures divine protection over it. When properly given, wealth is safeguarded from theft, destruction, and loss. Allah increases wealth in ways that may not always be visible to us. For instance, a person who fulfills their Zakat obligation might experience unexpected financial relief, such as lower medical expenses or unforeseen savings, which ultimately increase their financial well-being.

In the current economic climate, many helpless people, especially the poor and destitute, are struggling due to rising prices of essential goods. Many are unable to pay rent or afford sufficient food, yet they hesitate to seek help out of embarrassment. While Zakat can be given at any time of the year, Ramadan is considered the most virtuous period for giving, as it brings greater rewards. Those who are financially capable should not only fulfill their obligatory Zakat but also consider giving additional charity. Islam places no limit on generosity, and acts of giving bring blessings rather than depletion of wealth.

If we extend a helping hand to the underprivileged by giving generously in this Ramadan, we will not only ease their suffering but also earn immense rewards from Allah. Let us take this opportunity to bring joy to the less fortunate through our Zakat and Fitrah, fulfilling both our religious duty and our moral responsibility.
