Leadership for better future through social transformation

Md. Mashiur Rahman | July 19, 2026 00:00:00

Leadership is not solely about personal achievement or avoiding failure; it is about having the courage to innovate while ensuring that such innovation benefits society. A true leader possesses a clear vision, develops innovative action plans, demonstrates empathy, and maintains strong social awareness. Leaders have the power to inspire individuals, nations, and even the global community. They earn followers through their unique qualities, character, and actions.True leaders do not imitate others. Just as Kazi Nazrul Islam did not write poetry like Rabindranath Tagore, and Martin Luther King Jr. led society differently from Abraham Lincoln, every great leader brings a unique perspective and approach to leadership. Moreover, great leadership is not defined by wealth alone. Individuals such as Haji Muhammad Mohsin became respected leaders by using their resources for the betterment of society-a distinction that many wealthy people failed to achieve. People remember and admire leaders who empathize with their struggles, understand their needs, and work tirelessly for their well-being.

Leaders must possess a clear vision for the advancement of society. Following Singapore's independence in 1965, its first Prime Minister, Lee Kuan Yew, introduced a visionary development strategy focused on urban planning, economic growth, and social transformation. With the unwavering support of its citizens, Singapore rapidly evolved from a small developing nation into one of the world's most prosperous and developed countries. This remarkable transformation stands as a testament to Lee Kuan Yew's visionary leadership and long-term commitment to national development.

Ideas are fundamental to effective leadership, and innovative concepts have the power to transform societies and nations. Such innovation is driven by research, creativity, and a commitment to continuous improvement. In today's world, companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, LinkedIn, and Microsoft remain at the forefront of innovation because of their full emphasis on research, development, and performance. The impact of innovation extends far beyond the digital sector. In agriculture, for example, advancements such as hydroponic farming have enabled higher productivity on limited land. Similarly, the construction industry has witnessed remarkable progress through modern engineering techniques and innovative building methods, particularly in the Middle East. These examples demonstrate that great leaders are people of vision who generate ideas and transform them into meaningful progress.

Not all innovative ideas are feasible, and not all feasible ideas are financially viable. Many ideas generated by students, although creative and promising, often lack a realistic implementation strategy. Successful leaders understand that an idea alone is not enough; it must be supported by a well-designed and executable action plan. Leaders such as Mark Zuckerberg exemplify this principle by not only conceiving innovative ideas but also transforming them into successful ventures through effective planning and execution. Effective leaders consistently combine creativity with practical action, ensuring that their ideas are both achievable and financially sustainable.

Imitation is not the hallmark of true leadership; genuine leaders approach challenges with originality and innovation. For example, the poetry of Kazi Nazrul Islam differed significantly from that of Rabindranath Tagore, just as Martin Luther King Jr. led social change in a manner distinct from Abraham Lincoln. Similarly, platforms such as Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp provide unique user experiences despite serving similar purposes. Every great leader has a distinctive vision, perspective, and approach to their work. Furthermore, true leaders uphold honesty and integrity, even when doing so requires them to challenge prevailing norms and conventions. Muhammad (peace be upon him) did not simply conform to the customs of his society; rather, he called people to the monotheistic faith associated with Hazrat Ibrahim. This commitment to truth, principle, and moral courage lies at the heart of authentic leadership.

Leaders demonstrate courage by taking calculated risks and standing firmly by their principles, even in the face of adversity. Nelson Mandela exemplified such courage by enduring 27 years of imprisonment for his beliefs and his struggle against apartheid. Similarly, Muhammad (peace be upon him) left his homeland and faced immense challenges, yet he never compromised his principles for personal gain or political convenience. Courage is essential for turning vision into reality; therefore, aspiring leaders must cultivate the strength to confront obstacles and persevere in pursuit of their goals. Likewise, Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, renowned for his dedication to social justice and human welfare, also demonstrated exceptional courage throughout his leadership journey. His unwavering commitment to the rights of ordinary people earned him lasting respect and admiration.

Honesty is the cornerstone of effective leadership. Without honesty, leaders cannot earn the trust of others, and trust is essential for successful leadership. Organizations that consistently honour their commitments are more likely to gain the confidence and loyalty of their stakeholders. Likewise, respected leaders throughout history have been admired for their truthfulness, integrity, and moral character. For example, Gautama Buddha is revered for his commitment to truth and ethical conduct. Therefore, every leader should strive to cultivate honesty, recognizing that trust is built over time through consistent words and actions.

Leaders are not emotionless figures; they possess compassion and a genuine love for humanity. They respect individual differences and evaluate people based on their abilities and potential rather than expecting everyone to think or act alike. A true leader seeks the well-being, growth, and happiness of others. Throughout history, prophets and great reformers have demonstrated this commitment by dedicating their lives, time, and resources to the betterment of society. In the modern era, leadership also requires awareness of social and environmental responsibilities. This is reflected in concepts such as social responsibility, sustainable development, and environmental stewardship. True and lasting success cannot be achieved at the expense of society or the environment, as human well-being is closely interconnected with the well-being of the planet. Therefore, effective leaders must cultivate compassion for people, respect for the environment, and a commitment to creating a better future for all. Through such compassionate and responsible leadership, they can inspire meaningful and lasting positive change.

Without showing kindness and concern for others, no one can truly become an effective leader or achieve lasting happiness. This idea is reflected in many popular sayings that emphasize that success and happiness are not measured solely by wealth or material possessions. We often see in short films and real-life stories how acts of empathy and kindness earn appreciation, respect, and support from the wider community. It is important to distinguish between sympathy and empathy. Sympathy involves concern for someone, whereas empathy goes a step further by understanding their situation and taking meaningful action to help. For example, when a road accident occurs, some people may simply record the incident on their phones, while others immediately assist the injured and help transport them to a hospital. Those who demonstrate empathy through action are often admired and respected by society. Ultimately, people are naturally drawn to leaders who show genuine empathy, compassion, and concern for the well-being of others. Such qualities enable leaders to build trust, inspire loyalty, and create a positive impact on the communities they serve.

Followers play a crucial role in the development and success of leaders. A leader's influence grows as they build meaningful connections with people and address their needs and aspirations. Social media platforms such as Facebook illustrate the power of connectivity by bringing together people from across the world while creating value for both users and businesses. Today, social networking has become an integral part of modern life, enabling communication, information sharing, and community building on an unprecedented scale. Similarly, successful leaders are those who can unite people around a common vision and purpose. For example, Mahathir Mohamad effectively mobilized and inspired large segments of Malaysian society, contributing significantly to the country's economic and social development. His leadership serves as an example of how strong connections between leaders and followers can drive national progress. Likewise, many scholars and authors emphasize that leadership, like marketing, is fundamentally about building relationships and connecting people around shared goals and values.

Effective leaders prioritise action alongside clear and meaningful communication. Words alone are insufficient to establish great leadership; actions must reinforce what leaders say. Throughout history, respected leaders, including prophets and reformers, not only preached valuable principles but also demonstrated them through their own conduct and actions. By leading through example, they made their messages more credible, understandable, and inspiring to their followers. People are naturally drawn to leaders whose actions align with their words. Therefore, great leaders do not merely formulate plans-they implement them and produce tangible results. It is through consistent effort, dedication, and measurable achievements that leaders earn the trust and respect of others. Ultimately, true leadership is demonstrated not by promises alone, but also by meaningful actions and positive outcomes.

To attain happiness through distributing resources, one must first earn them. Therefore, prioritize innovation, develop a comprehensive action plan, and establish connections with people to execute it effectively, all with the aim of enhancing people's well-being. This endeavour will not only bring happiness to others but also to oneself, as the joy derived from distributing resources surpasses that of mere consumption. Embrace the role of a giver rather than a receiver, and find fulfilment in enriching the lives of others.

This is all about leadership for social transformation.
