A total of 1,251 people, infected with dengue fever, were hospitalised afresh in the last 24 hours until Monday morning. The number is 4.0 per cent lower than that of the previous 24 hours, according to official data.

The data also showed that the total number of hospitalised dengue patients declined to 5,562 on the day from 5,940 on Sunday.

The state-run Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) claimed that the number of death in the disease is 52 so far. But, media and unofficial sources said the death toll is more than double of the official figure.

Of the fresh dengue patients, 674 were from outside the capital city, while 577 were in Dhaka, according to the DGHS Health Emergency Operation Centre and Control Room.

With the latest number, the overall tally of the dengue-affected people rose to a new high of 64,765 since January. Of the figure, 59,030 patients returned home after receiving treatment.

Dr Ayesha Akter, a physician of the control room, said they have so far received information of 173 dengue-related deaths.

"We confirmed 52 deaths in dengue after analysing 88 of such death reports that we received," she added.

Meanwhile, officials of the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC), as part of its ongoing anti-mosquito drive, inspected 206 houses and establishments on the day.

A mobile court of the DSCC, led by its Executive Officer of Zone-1 Mizanur Rahman, jailed two people and fined two house owners in a spot trial after Aedes mosquito larvae were found in their houses during the drive.

The mobile team launched its drive at Central Road in the city and sentenced three days of imprisonment to two people after finding Aedes larvae in an establishment.

Beside, one house owner in Jhigatola area and one in Kolabagan area were also fined Tk 50,000 and Tk 10,000 respectively by the DSCC team, as the environment of their houses was found favourable for mosquito breeding.

According to various media reports, both the city corporations and the DGHS submitted reports to the High Court (HC) regarding their activities to prevent the dengue situation, stating that intensity of the outbreak is declining across the country.

The HC expressed its dissatisfaction over delayed spraying of insecticides, and opined that the city corporations and the government cannot avoid their responsibility in using insecticides in time.
