21 more die, 1,615 test positive

Covid-19 claimed 21 more lives and infected 1,615 people in the country in the past 24 hours, ending on Wednesday morning, accumulating the total death toll to 4,823 and infections to 3,42,671.

As per the death count, this is the lowest number of deaths in a day in the last one and half months. Earlier, 21 people died of the virus on August 1.

Among the deceased, 16 were male and five were female patients.

The daily press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the latest Covid-19 data.

Though the number of daily cases decreased in the last 24 hours, the death rate increased in recent weeks to 1.41 per cent.

The latest day's infection rate was 12.09 per cent, while the overall infection rate stood at 19.36 per cent.

Some 13,360 samples were tested in 94 labs across the country in last 24 hours. So far, 1,770,106 samples have been tested.

Besides, 2,375 more patients recovered during the 24-hour period, increasing the tally to 247,969, which takes the recovery rate to 7.36 per cent.

Of the deceased, 16 were men and five were women. Ten of them hailed from Dhaka, five from Chattogram, four from Khulna, and one each from Rajshahi and Sylhet.

Twenty of them died in different hospitals, and one at home.

Division-wise, out of the total 4,823 fatalities till date, 2,349 were from Dhaka division, 1,013 from Chattogram, 410 from Khulna, 324 from Rajshahi, 217 from Sylhet, 180 from Barishal, 228 from Rangpur, and 102 from Mymensingh.

The gender-wise analysis of the total Covid-19 victims showed that 3,760 were male, and 1,063 female.

Meanwhile, a statement of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA) noted that the number of doctors, who died of coronavirus infection, stood at 87 so far until Wednesday.

The BMA said some 2,762 doctors, 1,953 nurses and 3,248 other health workers had been infected with the virus from March 8 to September 16, taking the total number of infected to 7,963.
