35 more die of coronavirus

The death toll continued to rise as 35 more patients succumbed to the coronavirus in last 24 hours ending on Saturday noon, the official data showed.

With the latest fatalities, a total of 4,447 people have so far lost their battle against the deadly virus that has already spread all over the country.

In terms of fatalities, Bangladesh, home to around 165 million people, has ranked eighth in Asia after India, Iran, Turkey, Iraq, Pakistan, China, and Indonesia, according to worldometer info, a website that provides real time statistics about the pandemic.

With 1,950 new cases recorded in last 24 hours, Bangladesh became the third country in Asia that reported more than 0.32 million confirmed cases, officials said.

The entire tally of viral infections rose to 323,556 as of September 05, according to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

At the same time, the recovery rate kept increasing as 217,852 patients have so far recovered from viral infections.

On the 180th day since the first coronavirus case was detected here on March 8 last, the number of Covid-19 tests reached 1,617,958 and the total infection rate stood at 20.00 per cent.

According to Saturday's health bulletin on coronavirus issued by the DGHS, a total of 12,847 samples were tested across the country since yesterday noon.

Of the tests, some 1,950 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 35 more deaths recorded across the country during the period, it mentioned.

"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 323,565 and 4,447 respectively," the bulletin signed by DGHS additional director general DrNasima Sultana said.

Of the total deaths, 48.44 per cent was recorded in Dhaka Division, followed by Chattogram (21.50 per cent), Khulna (8.34 per cent), Rajshahi (6.63 per cent), Rangpur (4.59 per cent), Sylhet (4.45 per cent), Barishal (3.89 per cent) and Mymensingh (2.16 per cent), it added.

At the same time, it mentioned that 1,661 patients made recovery and it took the rate to 67.33 per cent.

Globally over 26.8 million people have been infected with the novel coronavirus and 879,444 died until 5:15 pm on Saturday, according to Worldometer info on coronavirus.
