Thirty eight more people died from Covid-19 disease in the 24-hour period until Sunday morning in the country, showing an upward trajectory of deaths and new cases.

With the latest death tolls, including 28 on Saturday and 17 on Friday, total deaths from the viral disease reached 6,388 since this March.

The number of new positive cases also increased to 2,060 in the 24-hour period from 1,847, reported in the previous period until Saturday morning, as per data available with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Taking the new cases into account, a total of 4,47,341 people have been infected in Bangladesh so far.

The country reported the first positive case on March 8 and first death on March 18.

The DGHS, through a statement, said it has so far reported fatality rate at 1.43 per cent, recovery rate at 81.02 per cent, and detection rate at 16.89 per cent for the entire pandemic period, while detection rate was 14.85 per cent in the latest 24-hour period.

Among the ill-fated individuals, 28 died in Dhaka division, three in Chattogram, two in each of Khulna and Mymensingh, and one in each of Rajshahi, Barishal and Rangpur divisions.

The figure comprised 28 male and 10 female, all of whom died in hospitals, the DGHS said, adding that 19 people were over 60 years old and 10 were between 51 and 60 years.

The DGHS also said 13,870 samples were collected in the latest reporting period, taking the total figure to over 2.6 million.

Currently 117 laboratories are operating across the country to conduct Covid-19 test.

With the growing number of deaths and new cases, Bangladesh is now the 24th worst-hit nation in the globe and fifth in Asia, according to Worldometers, an information portal.

Breaking out from China a year ago, the novel coronavirus has so far claimed 1.38 million lives and infected 58.60 million people.
