The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched probes into the alleged corruption of former BFIU chief Masud Biswas and former CU VC Dr Shireen Akhter, who abused their respective positions.
According to the ACC's primary investigations, after assuming the responsibility of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) of the Central Bank, Biswas allegedly adopted unfair means to amass huge wealth.
The former vice-chancellor of Chittagong University (CU) was accused of financial irregularities, including alleged mismanagement of university funds, unethical recruitment practices, and nepotism in academic appointments.
ACC Deputy Director and Public Relations Officer Md Akhtarul Islam informed journalists of this on Wednesday.
The central banker adopted unfair means regarding the aircraft purchase of Sky Capital Airlines Limited, according to the primary investigation. By taking a bribe from the company, Mr. Biswas concluded an investigation of the company without sending a report to the law enforcement agency.
Mr. Biswas also approved a report as a general monitoring report instead of an intelligence report under the Anti-Money Laundering Regulations. The report was related to the embezzlement of Tk 50 billion by NRB Commercial Bank Chairman Tamal Parvez.
Due to malpractices and an abnormal increase in the share prices of the stock market-listed Himidri Limited, the transactions of the company were suspended. However, the alleged official ordered to withdraw the status quo in exchange for financial benefits.
Mr. Biswas also received undue facilities from different business organisations, including Tanaka Group, SA Group, Anwar Group, Thermex Group, and Zeenat Enterprise.
As an accomplice of Saiful Alam Masud, chairman of S Alam Group, the ex-BFIU official has siphoned off billions of Taka using known or unknown accounts, taking loans from Islami Bank.
