After cloudy day, light rain surprises city

February 23, 2025 00:00:00

There was little sun in Dhaka on Saturday, with darkening clouds obscuring the sky. Then, just as the morning ticked over into the afternoon, light showers began to fall in several parts of the capital, reports bdnews24.com.

The sudden rain caused some inconvenience for roadside traders and those who work outside. Rickshaw pullers were drenched, as were some of their passengers. Pedestrians rushed towards their destinations, some with umbrellas held over their heads.

Saturday fell on the ninth day of the Bengali month of Falgun. There has been a chill in the air around this time over the past few years, including in the capital. But this year, winter has eased off a bit early. Even before the month of Magh, temperatures have started to creep up.

Meteorologist Kazi Zebunnesa said, "There was rain in some parts of the capital - what we call trace amounts, or an unmeasurable amount. In simple terms, it was very little. But Rajshahi saw 4 mm of rainfall."

Zebunnesa said, "There may be scattered rainfall in a few places tomorrow as well."

In its regular forecast, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said that there may be rain or thundershowers at one or two places in the Dhaka, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions in the 24 hours from 9am on Saturday.

The lowest temperature recorded across the country over the previous 24-hour period was 13.4 degrees Celsius in Panchagarh's Tentulia. The highest temperature was 33 degrees Celsius in Chattogram's Sitakunda.

In its forecast for Sunday, the BMD said there may be rain or thundershowers at one or two places in the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet divisions.

Nighttime temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged, but daytime temperatures may fall by 1-3 degrees Celsius, it said.
