Ahsan H. Mansur next BB governor

FE REPORT | August 14, 2024 00:00:00

The government is set to appoint Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur, a former senior official of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), as the next governor of the central bank, sources confirmed.

In this regard, the maximum age limit of 67 for the position of Bangladesh Bank governor will be abolished, they added. Presently, Mr. Mansur is over 72 years old.

When contacted, Mr. Mansur told the FE that he has heard about being chosen for the post but has yet to receive the appointment letter.

Mr. Mansur, a former teacher in the Department of Economics at the University of Dhaka, will be the 13th governor of the central bank and will replace former governor Abdur Rouf Talukder who resigned on August 9, a day after the interim government took office.

He is taking on the role of central bank governor at a time when the country's economy, particularly the banking sector, is reeling from severe problems including high non-performing loans, falling foreign currency reserves, mounting inflation, and a very unstable macroeconomy.

Mr. Mansur is currently serving as Executive Director at the Policy Research Institute (PRI) of Bangladesh.

He completed his PhD from the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada, has a Master's degree from McMaster University in Canada, and graduated from the University of Dhaka with a degree in Economics.
