Army accorded magistracy in countrywide operation

In shoring up its standing, the post-uprising interim government bestowed magistracy on commissioned officers of Bangladesh Army for bolstering countrywide operation for the next two months.
To this effect, the Ministry of Public Administration issued Tuesday a gazette notification with "immediate effect".
Following outbreaks of unrest across the country centering massive student movement in July-August period, the then government deployed the army along with imposition of curfew.
The government of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina was toppled in a student-mass uprising on August 5 at the climax of what had started off as anti-quota and then anti-discrimination student movement.
Unrest still breaks out in various forms in different parts of the country, including the capital and industrial belts around it.
The public administration ministry issued the notification under section 12 (1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure 1898, media reports say.
The army officials can deal with cases under Sections 64, 65, 83, 84, 86, 95 (2), 100, 105, 107, 109, 110, 126, 127, 128, 130, 133, and 142 of CrPC.
