Army wants fair election within govt roadmap

FE REPORT | November 06, 2025 00:00:00

The Bangladesh Army wants the upcoming national election to be held as per the roadmap set by the interim government, believing that a timely election will further improve political stability and help normalise the country's law-and-order situation.

Lieutenant General Md Mainur Rahman, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Army Training and Doctrine Command (ARTDOC), made the observation at a press conference held at the Officers' Mess in Dhaka Cantonment on Wednesday.

Chief Adviser of the interim government Prof. Muhammad Yunus has already announced that the 13th parliamentary elections will be held in February next year. The Election Commission is taking preparations accordingly.

"Like the people of the country, the army also wants a free, fair and neutral election to be held in line with the government's roadmap. The timeframe has already been outlined in that plan. We believe that holding the election will improve the country's stability, gradually normalise the law and order situation, and allow the army to return to the cantonments. We are looking forward to that," Lt Gen Mainur told newsmen.

About the army's role over the past 15 months, he said: "The army has faced significant challenges during this period. It was not an easy situation, nor one that Bangladesh experiences regularly. That's why we also hope for a fair election, after which we can return to our cantonments."

Regarding the election preparedness, Lt Gen Mainur said the army is taking necessary steps based on the current roadmap outlined by the government.

"Our regular training programs are now being conducted on a limited scale. Within that scope, we are focusing on the responsibilities we will have during the election," he added.

He also said if the army has to stay outside until the election or even for some time afterward, their training will continue to be disrupted.

Talking about the recent propaganda against the military, Lt Gen Mainur said: "Certain vested quarters are spreading false, fabricated, and deliberate misinformation about the army. The army today is more united than ever before. We will carry out the duties entrusted to us with professionalism and commitment."

Referring to the post August-5 situation, he said: "During this 15-mopnth period, the army worked on flood relief in Cumilla and Noakhali, responded to various public demands, and helped control road blockades. Without our presence, the situation could have deteriorated far more than anyone can imagine."
