Bangladesh summons Indian envoy, hands protest note

FE REPORT | February 07, 2025 00:00:00

Dhaka lodged 'a strong protest' with the Indian government over "false and fabricated" statements continuously being made by deposed premier Sheikh Hasina allegedly instigating instability in Bangladesh.

Acting High Commissioner of India in Dhaka Pawan Badhe was called to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh on Thursday and handed over the protest note, as Hasina's comments and statements made on different platforms, including social media, from her refuge in India incited repercussions across the country.

Through the envoy Dhaka conveyed "deep concern, disappointment and serious reservation of the Government of Bangladesh as such statements are hurting the sentiments of the people in Bangladesh", a spokesperson for the ministry said. The foreign ministry also emphasised that such activities by her are considered "a hostile act towards Bangladesh and are not conducive to the efforts at establishing a healthy relationship between the two countries".

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs requested the Government of India to immediately take appropriate measures, in the spirit of mutual respect and understanding, to stop her from making such "false, fabricated and incendiary" statements using social media and other communications while she is in India, the spokesperson added.
