BD makes formal request to India for Hasina extradition

FE REPORT | November 24, 2025 00:00:00

Bangladesh has formally renewed its request for India to hand over former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her former home minister, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, after the country's International Crimes Tribunal sentenced both in absentia to death for crimes against humanity linked to last year's political unrest.

Foreign adviser Md Touhid Hossain on Sunday said Dhaka had issued a fresh extradition appeal to New Delhi on Friday, marking the second time the interim administration has sought the return of the ousted leader, who has been living in India since the collapse of her government in August last year. Speaking to reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Sunday evening, Hossain confirmed that the latest request had been transmitted by the Bangladesh High Commission in Delhi to India's Ministry of External Affairs.

The tribunal's verdict, delivered earlier this month, found Hasina and Khan Kamal guilty of ordering and overseeing systematic abuses during the July Movement, a wave of mass protests that paralysed the country in 2024.

Hasina, one of South Asia's longest-serving leaders, fled to India within hours of her administration's collapse.
