Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin in a meeting on Saturday with his Chinese counterpart Wang Wentao sought the country's assistance in drone technology for use in the agricultural sector.

Sheikh Bashiruddin expressed his hope that the support would play an effective role in strengthening trade and technological cooperation between the two countries.

The meeting took place at a city hotel where Sheikh Bashiruddin led a Bangladeshi delegation. The Chinese delegation was led by their Commerce Minister Wang Wentao.

Sheikh Bashiruddin said, "Drone technology can revolutionise the application of fertilisers, sowing seeds, pesticide spraying, and crop monitoring. China's expertise and technology can play a crucial role in Bangladesh's agriculture sector."

The Chinese commerce minister expressed interest in enhancing technology and investment cooperation with Bangladesh. He stated China was ready to assist Bangladesh in agriculture and digital technology. Specifically, we can collaborate in smart agriculture and drone technology to boost productivity.

Seeking assistance in fishing vessels and technology, Sheikh Bashiruddin said the development of the marine fisheries sector required advanced fishing vessels and fish processing technology. China's experience and technical support can further strengthen this sector.

Two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) were signed between the commerce ministries of Bangladesh and China during the meeting-one on forming a Joint Working Group to promote free trade, and another on cooperation in e-commerce. The MoUs were signed by Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashiruddin on behalf of Bangladesh and Commerce Minister Wang Wentao on behalf of China.

Earlier, the Chinese Commerce Minister was received by Sheikh Bashiruddin on his arrival in Dhaka on the day.

During his two-day visit, the minister is scheduled to meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today (Sunday), in addition to his other engagements, a senior official told UNB.

Chief Adviser Prof Yunus will inaugurate the Bangladesh-China conference on investment and trade in Dhaka on the day.
