BD sees another horrific month

August records one-fourth of total casualties

Bangladesh passed another horrific month as one-fourth of the total coronavirus infections and fatalities here were registered in August.

In the month that ended on Monday, the densely populated country saw 1,170 deaths that was 27 per cent of the total 4,281 fatalities recorded so far.

In terms of infections, the nation of around 165-million population witnessed one-fourth of the confirmed cases as 75,335 people tested COVID-19 positive during the outgoing month.

But August was encouraging as far as the recovery rate is concerned as this growing South Asian economy, hit hard by coronavirus, saw 34 per cent of the entire recovery of 69,751 patients.

With 2,174 new cases recorded in the past 24 hours ending on Monday noon, the entire caseload now stands at 312,996, according to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

On 175th day since the detection of the first coronavirus case on March 08, the number of COVID-19 tests reached 1,550,203 and the total infection rate climbed to 20.19 per cent.

Although the number of infections registered a slight decline for the past few weeks, Bangladesh still ranks fourth in Asia and second in South Asia in terms of infections.

According to Monday's health bulletin on novel coronavirus issued by the DGHS, a total of 12,454 samples were tested countrywide since Sunday noon.

Of the tests, some 2,174 samples were found COVID-19 positive along with 33 more deaths recorded during the period, it mentioned.

"With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 312,996 and 4,281 respectively," said the bulletin signed by DGHS additional director general Dr Nasima Sultana.

Of the total deaths, 48.33 per cent were recorded in Dhaka division followed by Chattogram (21.77 per cent), Khulna (8.32 per cent), Rajshahi (6.70 per cent), Sylhet (4.46 per cent), Rangpur (4.44 per cent), Barisal (3.88 per cent) and Mymensingh (2.10 per cent).

The DGHS data also revealed that the entire tally of recovery reached 204,887 with Monday's 2,980 patients.

The recovery rate rose to 65.46 per cent.

Globally, more than 25.4 million people were infected by coronavirus and 85,179 died until 6:10 pm on Monday, according to worldometer.info on the virus update.
