The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) deferred a decision regarding the removal of President Md. Sahabuddin until after its internal discussions, as confirmed in a meeting with leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement (ADSM) and the National Citizen Committee on Saturday evening.
BNP representatives said that the party would make a decision after consulting within the party forum.
The meeting took place at the BNP Chairperson's political office in Gulshan, where BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, along with Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed and Joint Secretary General of BNP Shahid Uddin Choudhury Annie, was present.
They talked to seven ADSM leaders and representatives from the National Citizen Committee.
This discussion spanned one and a half hours and covered several topics, including the demand for Sahabuddin's removal.
Following the meeting, ADSM convener Hasnat Abdullah addressed reporters, saying, "On the 23rd, we called for national unity among pro-democracy political parties to lead the popular uprising that ousted fascist Sheikh Hasina. This was our first step. Now, the remaining obstacle to fully dismantling fascism is the removal of Chuppu (President Md. Sahabuddin) and establishing a new political arrangement." He emphasised that ongoing discussions were aimed at achieving these goals.
BNP leaders said they would deliberate on these matters within the party forum and then put forth a solution for the nation.
The meeting was also attended by ADSM spokesperson Umma Fatema, Member Secretary Arif Sohail, National Citizen Committee convener Nasir Uddin Patoari, chief organiser Abdul Hannan Masood, and committee spokesperson Samantha Sharmin.
