Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary-General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has expressed dismay at the chief adviser's comments on the national election.
"Many (people) have been heartened on hearing the chief adviser's address to the nation marking 100 days in his office, but I am a little bit disheartened," he said at a discussion, marking the 48th death anniversary of Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bashani at the National Press Club in the capital on Monday.
The seasoned BNP leader said, "We expected that the chief adviser will outline a roadmap to the general election by identifying all the problems and applying his prudence. Why do I repeatedly call for holding the election? All problems could be solved once the election is held.
"It is not a matter whether BNP goes to power or not, but it (election) will help drive away those who are trying to do harm to the nation and the country."
About reforms, he said, "You (interim government) won't be able to complete reforms by keeping collaborators of the deposed fascist (Sheikh Hasina) at the Bangladesh Secretariat. People will doubt if you (interim government) make delay in holding the election.
"We are in favour of reforms and we would carry out reforms. We did not put any obstacles on your (interim government) way, but we are continuously lending our support to you."
Mr Fakhrul called upon the government to be careful about running the country so that people feel relieved against the backdrop of skyrocketing prices of the daily essentials.
"The people of the country expect something good from you. Whatever initiatives you have taken should be visible to people. Try to break the market syndicates," he said.
BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, party chairperson's Adviser Habibur Rahman Habib, Joint Secretary General Khairul Kabir Khokon, Swechchhasebak Affairs Secretary Mir Sarafat Ali Sopu, Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal Senior Joint General Secretary Helen Jerin Khan and AKM Rafiqul Islam Ripon of Save the Country Save the People were present, among others.
