Single-day cash deposit to be doubled

The securities regulator has assured stock brokers of doubling single-day cash deposit by investors to accelerate their participation in transactions. The assurance came on Monday at a webinar attended by a large number of stock brokers of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE). The chairman of the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) Prof. Shibli Rubayat Ul Islam attended the webinar as the chief guest. "The securities regulator has said single day cash deposit will be doubled. The official order is likely to be issued within this week," said Sharif Anwar Hossain, president of DSE Brokers Association (DBA). Page-9

China accused of military movements

India said Monday its soldiers thwarted China's "provocative" military movements near a disputed border in Ladakh months into their deadliest standoff in decades. A statement by India's defense ministry said the Chinese army on Saturday night "carried out provocative military movements to change the status quo" and "violated the previous consensus arrived at during military and diplomatic engagements" to settle the standoff in the cold-desert region. Onion, ginger prices soar

Prices of onion and ginger witnessed significant hike in the city's kitchen markets in the last few days, adding to the sufferings of the consumers, especially the commoners who had already been hit hard by price hike of other essentials, including staple rice. Ginger, one of the main cooking ingredients, became unexpectedly costlier only within a dew days. Imported ginger prices shot up by 50-60 per kilogram (kg) in a week as was sold at Tk 220-240 a kg on Monday. Prices of the local varieties too soared to Tk 180-200 a kg from Tk 140-160 a kg earlier. BD eyes own brand of motor vehicles

Bangladesh has taken an initiative to manufacture its own brand of motor vehicles, industries minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun said on Monday. The state-owned Pragoti Industries Limited will produce automobiles with technical assistance from the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan, he said.
