Dhaka stocks retreat this week

Stocks retreated this week to Thursday from the previous week's big gain as investors went defensive following the fuel oil price surge amid growing economic pressures. This week saw four trading days instead of five days as Tuesday was public holiday on the occasion of holy Ashura. The benchmark DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed lower in all the four trading sessions, as jittery investors rushed to offload their stocks to avoid further losses. Page 9

Killing of Palestinian children slated’

Almost 40 Palestinian children have been killed so far this year in the occupied territories and in many incidents, Israeli forces appear to use lethal force in a manner that violates international human rights law, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet said. FIFA advances Qatar World Cup by a day

FIFA on Thursday officially brought forward the opening match of this year's World Cup by one day to November 20 in a rare change so that hosts Qatar feature in the gala game. Football's top officials universally approved the decision, FIFA said in a statement while Qatar said it would give unspecified help to fans affected by the change. Page 13

Call for cash incentive for chilled fish export

A state body suggests supplying cash incentive to exporters of chilled fish with an eye to helping boost export of the sector. The Business Promotion Council (BPC) under commerce ministry currently offers different initiatives to boost export growth. Page 16
