FE Report

The Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) strengthened its crackdown on unfit vehicles and errant drivers on Tuesday to bring discipline in the public transportation system.

BRTA conducted mobile courts, led by its seven magistrates, at different points in the capital.

The mobile courts started their activities at 9.00 am at Bangla Motor, Mohakhali, Manik Mia Avenue and elsewhere in the city.

They filed cases against 161 vehicle owners and also imposed fines amounting to Tk 225,000 until 6.00 pm on the day, according to its enforcement division.

The drive was reinforced following a meeting, held at the ministry concerned on Monday. A total of 11 magistrates in Dhaka and Chittagong are now busy in hunting unfit automobiles.

BRTA director (enforcement) Nur Mohammad Majumdar told the FE that a bus driver was jailed for not having his driving licence.

He said the mobile courts will continue their operations for an indefinite period.

BRTA officials and members of traffic police started the drive in the city against illegal vehicles from the first week of this month after student outrage for ensuring safe roads sparked by an accident.

The protest started after two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College were killed and 12 others were injured, as a bus ploughed through a crowd of students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on Airport Road on July 29.
