The country’s telecom regulator is planning to set up a monitoring system to beef up cyber security of mobile networks.
The system will monitor mobile networks, system, applications, database, etc, to detect and protect cyber security of IT resources of the sector.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has taken policy decision to purchase equipments to build this system under its Digital Security Cell.
Security measures for data networks will be strengthened and regularly monitored to prevent attacks that could cause disaster in the country’s digital infrastructure, the BTRC sources concerned have said.
They have said the system will help take necessary steps immediately to ensure safety at the same time. It will be purchased using a portion of the Tk 300-million fund, allocated in the budget to purchase cyber security equipment of the telecom regulator.
The BTRC will purchase different types of service modules that are mostly related to cyber security. These include Security Information and Event Management (SIEM), Vulnerability Assessment and Penetration Test (VAPT), Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR), Extended Detection and Response (XDR), Security Orchestration Automation and Response (SOAR), User and Entity Behaviour Analytics (UEBA), Network Behaviour Anomaly Detection (NBAD) or Network Traffic Analyser (NTA), Threat Intelligence (TI), Intrusion Detection System (IDS), Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Artificial Intelligence.
The BTRC wants to install this monitoring system in mobile networks first. It will install the system in the country’s IIG network as well, if it is found cost-effective and beneficial as expected.
Meanwhile, an initiative titled Telecom Monitoring System (TMS) is also being established to collect real-time information on voice calls, data traffic, network, and service quality.
The telecom regulator has recently signed a purchase agreement in this regard, involving Tk 776.5 million, with Canadian TKC Telecom.
TMS will be capable to immediately verify the actual condition of telecommunication networks in urban as well as rural areas, islands, haors, and coastal areas.
The service quality of telecom networks can be more accurately verified and actual status of customer services can be known through live monitoring of operators’ networks. Additionally, it will be possible to verify tariffs that the operators offer to the customers and analyse whether or not those tariff packages are approved by the BTRC and whether or not the customers are being unfairly harmed.
Such information will allow to settle the customers’ complaints effectively, said the BTRC website.
