Putting pressure for making Tk 14b loan proposal

Case filed against Salman, former BB governor, 10 others

FE REPORT | September 16, 2024 00:00:00

A case has been filed against former private industry and investment adviser of ousted prime minister, the former Bangladesh Bank governor, and 10 former and current officials of Bangladesh Infrastructure Finance Fund Limited (BIFFL).

Former adviser Salman F. Rahman, former BB Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder, and other officials are accused of coercion, fraud, and defamation, according to the plaintiff and the case document.

According to the complaint, the accused conspired in July 2019 to pressure the plaintiff into recommending a loan proposal of Tk 14 billion for Salman F. Rahman's Teesta Solar Project.

When the plaintiff refused, citing company policies, the former BB governor became angry. Later, they demanded an advance of Tk 2.0 billion through an investment in zero-coupon bonds, but the plaintiff again refused, citing insufficient funds.

This further angered the former governor.

As the plaintiff continued to reject their illegal demands, the accused allegedly forced him to resign from his job, causing him significant financial loss, social harm, and defamation.

The lawsuit was submitted by former BIFFL CEO S.M. Formanul Islam in Dhaka's Metropolitan Magistrate Saiful Islam's court on Sunday.

The plaintiff, Formanul, confirmed these developments.

The court recorded his statement and instructed the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to investigate the allegations and submit a report.

The accused include Salman Fazlur Rahman, chairman of Beximco Group and former private industry and investment adviser to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, Md. Eklasur Rahman, former director and CEO of BIFFL, Md. Monirul Islam Khan, former company secretary of BIFFL, Abu Hena Md. Rahmatul Munim, former director of BIFFL and also former NBR chairman, Khandaker Anowarul Islam, former director of BIFFL, Sazzad Hasan, former director of BIFFL, S.M. Anisuzzaman, executive director and chief executive director of BIFFL, Sheikh Anower Shadath, vice-president and head of credit at BIFFL, Sujith Bosak, senior principal officer and head of the internal control department at BIFFL, Amir Nadim, principal officer of the credit risk management department at BIFFL, and Khandaker Riazul Huq, principal officer of the credit and information department at BIFFL.
