Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed Tuesday held a closed-door meeting with two advisers of the interim government, Dr Asif Nazrul and Nahid Islam, amid a new wave of turmoil over the President's fate.
This meeting is believed to have high significance when the demand for President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation is becoming stronger through massive student demonstrations.
Sources said Law Adviser Dr Asif Nazrul and Information Adviser Nahid Islam at about 2.00 pm went to the Chief Justice's office at the Supreme Court and held a meeting for about 40 minutes.
Thereafter, the Chief Justice also held meeting with the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), RAB DG and DMP Commissioner.
Earlier on August 8, the President took opinion from the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court before administering oath to the interim government. He gave oath to the advisers only after receiving a special reference from the Appellate Division judges in favour of interim government.
Now, although a demand has been raised for resignation of the president, a constitutional vacuum is prevailing to this effect. In this circumstance, senior lawyers are suggesting that the advisory council may have the scope to take further opinion from the apex court regarding the issue.
Amid such suggestions, the two advisers went to the Chief Justice and held the parley behind closed doors.
Demand for President Mohammed Shahabuddin's resignation is getting louder and stronger after his remark over the 'resignation letter' of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
