FE Report | February 24, 2019 00:00:00

Forensic investigators collected 36 DNA samples from relatives of the dead fire victims in Old Dhaka's Chawkbazar area until Saturday.

The officials of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Bangladesh Police collected their blood and saliva samples at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for cross-matching.

Until Saturday, CID collected samples against 19 bodies whose identities are yet to be recognised.

Meanwhile, forensic doctors identified 48 victims and handed over their bodies to family members so far. Among them, two bodies were handed over on Saturday.

Besides, bodies of 46 victims were handed over to their families on Friday. Official death toll from the deadly fire incident that ravaged a number of apartment buildings reached 67.

Ashraful Alam, an assistant analyst at CID's forensic laboratory, told the FE that on Saturday they took samples from six people, whose near and dear ones have been missing since the devastating fire.

All the samples will be taken to laboratory soon for identification through cross-matching. It could take one week or even one month to complete the entire of procedure of cross-matching, he also said.

CID will continue taking samples from people, who still have not found the bodies of their relatives. He also urged those people to come and give their DNA samples.

Salam, father of Mostafa, who hailed from Rangpur district and has been missing since the fire incident, and Shirin Begum, wife of Nurzzaman, who hailed from Mymensingh region, submitted samples on the day.

Besides, Rokhsana, wife of Ibrahim, who hailed from the city's Keraniganj area and has been missing, gave samples, among others, on the same day.

Meanwhile, Jatiya Party (JP) co-chairman and deputy opposition leader in parliament Golam Mohammad Quader expressed his deep shock and condolence to the bereaved family members of the victims after visiting the DMCH Burn Unit.

He prayed for quick recovery of the injured victims.

Repetition of such brutal fire incident should be stopped, as the people are becoming victims and paying heavy prices for it, Mr Quader said.

Recalling the Nimtoli fire incident that occurred in the capital 10 years ago, the JP leader said it is very sad and regrettable that not a single of the recommendations that were placed after the horrific incident was implemented.

He also urged all the stakeholders to be united to play an effective role, so that no such fire incident repeats.
