Covid-19 cases close to 300,000-mark

With an exponential growth of Covid-19, the tally of confirmed cases has almost touched 300,000-mark in the country on Tuesday, the official figure showed.

The entire caseload stood at 299,628 with 2,535 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours until Tuesday noon, according to the state-run Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

The confirmed infections came from 1,470,191 samples tested so far across the country, home to around 165 million people.

On the 169th day since detection of the first coronavirus case on March 8 last, the number of deaths from the viral disease crossed 4,000.

In terms of fatalities, Bangladesh has become the eighth country in Asia.

On the other hand, the recovery rate of novel coronavirus continues climbing. Now it has reached highest 62.33 per cent with 186,556 people getting recovered so far across the country.

According to Tuesday's health bulletin on coronavirus issued by the DGHS, a total of 14,153 samples were tested across the country in 24 hours.

Of the tests, some 2,545 samples were found Covid-19 positive along with 45 more deaths recorded all over the country during the period, it mentioned.

"With these, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 299,625 and 4,028 respectively," the bulletin signed by DGHS additional director general Dr Nasima Sultana said.

Of the total deaths, 1,945 were recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (889), Khulna (326), Rajshahi (272), Sylhet (184), Rangpur (168), Barishal (157) and Mymensingh (87), it added.

At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 3,881 patients recovered from Covid-19, bringing the entire tally of recoveries to 186,756.

Globally over 23.8 million people have been infected with the novel coronavirus and 817,640 died until 6:15 pm on Tuesday, according to Worldometer info on coronavirus.
