Covid deaths exceed 4,000

32 more die in last 24 hrs with caseload passing 300k

Thirty-two more patients died of coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours ending on Saturday, official figures say.

With the latest fatalities, a total of 4,206 have so far lost their lives to the deadly virus that has already spread all over the country, according to the state-controlled Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

In terms of fatalities, the small country of around 170 million was ranked sixth in Asia, after India, Iran, Pakistan, China, and Indonesia.

With 2,131 new cases recorded in the last 24 hours, Bangladesh's infection tally rose to 308,925 and it became the fourth country in Asia that reported more than 0.3 million confirmed cases, officials said.

On the 173rd day since the first coronavirus case was detected on March 8 last, the number of COVID-19 tests totalled 1,525,815 and the total infection rate stood at 20.25 per cent.

The DGHS, however, highlighted the gradual rise in the number of recovery as the rate increased further to 64.37 per cent.

In its statement issued by the DGHS, it said a total of 11,689 samples were tested across the country since Yesterday noon.

Of the tests, some 2,131 samples returned COVID-19 positive along with 32 more deaths recorded all over the country during the period, it mentioned.

With these numbers, the overall tally of confirmed cases and deaths rose to 308,925 and 4,206 respectively, said the statement signed by DGHS additional director general Dr Nasima Sultana.

Of the total deaths, 2,030 deaths were recorded in Dhaka division, followed by Chattogram (920), Khulna (348), Rajshahi (279), Sylhet (191), Rangpur (186), Barisal (165) and Mymensingh (89), it said.

At the same time, the DGHS data also mentioned that 2,027 patients recovered, taking the total tally of recovery to 198863.

Globally, over 24.9 million people were infected with the novel coronavirus and 842,102 died until Saturday 6:15 pm, according to Worldometer data.
