CHATTOGRAM, Aug 19: Chittagong port, the prime seaport of the country, has advanced three steps in a year to become the world's 64th-busiest port.

The latest 2022 edition of Lloyd's List's One Hundred Ports was published on Friday. The list has been prepared based on the total throughput of containers at seaports in 2021.

It may be mentioned that the Chittagong port advanced for the last seven consecutive years, but slipped nine notches  "Sea will remain rough near the centre of the deep depression. Under its influence, deep convection is taking place over the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas" the weather department said.

Deep convection refers to the thermally driven turbulent mixing that moves air parcels from the lower to the upper atmosphere.

All fishing boats and trawlers in the northern Bay of Bengal and deep sea have been advised to take shelter immediately.

The low-lying areas of Satkhira, Khulna Bagerhat, Jhalokathi, Pirojpur, Barguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Barishal, Laxmipur, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni Chattogram, Cox's Bazar and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by rising tides, BMD said.

to rank 67th among the 100 top ports across the world in 2021's Lloyd's List, the world's oldest journal on port and shipping.

In the Lloyd's List, the port ranked 58th in the 2020 edition of the ranking, 64th in 2019, 70th in 2018, and 71st, 76th, 87th and 86th, respectively, in 2017, 2016, 2015 and 2014.

The premier port of the country has improved on the list as the number of containers has increased over the past several years.

In this list of Lloyd's, Shanghai Port of China and Singapore have ranked first and second, respectively.

Omar Faruk, secretary of the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA), said, "Chittagong port obtained the 64th position among the 100 ports of the world. The position of the port was 67 earlier. As the port has been handling a huge number of containers, the position has moved up."

CPA Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said, "Chittagong port used to handle more than 92% of export and import cargoes of Bangladesh. It handled a record quantity of containers in 2021."

"The prime seaport of the country handled a total of 32,14,548 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) containers from January 01 to December 31 in 2021. The port is overcoming the crisis of the Corona outbreak and has restored the speed of operational activities."

The CPA chief said, "The port handled a record quantity of open cargoes in the last year. Now, the waiting time for ships in Chittagong port is zero."

He said a total of 4,209 ships came to the Chittagong port in 2021, while 3,728 ships came in 2020 and 3,807 in 2019.

Despite the Covid impact on maritime trade across the world, Chittagong port could uphold the growth rate when it comes to handling cargoes and containers, he added.
