Dhaka to strike dozen MoUs with New Delhi

PM’s visit to India

FE REPORT | October 03, 2019 00:00:00

Bangladesh expects to sign 10 to 12 memos with India during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's visit to the neighbouring country, foreign minister Dr AK Abdul Momen said on Wednesday.

Hasina will be visiting India from October 3 through October 6.

Border killing, Rohingya issue, NRC, connectivity, withdrawal of anti-dumping duty will top the agenda of the bilateral meeting between Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

The minister disclosed this while talking to reporters on the visit.

On the issue of the border killing, the minister said that deaths on the frontier by BSF had come down but Bangladesh wants to see such incidents do not recur.

When asked despite having the "warmest" bilateral relations between the two countries, why India was fencing its border with Bangladesh and what was Bangladesh's response to it, the minister sidestepped the question.

Dr Momen said that there would be a discussion on the framework agreement on the water sharing of seven common rivers, including the Teesta, in the bilateral meeting.

He noted that the scope for water connectivity between the two countries would also be widened.

The foreign minister also mentioned that the number of memorandums of understanding to be signed has yet to be finalised.

"It may be from 10 to 12", he said adding that these will cover education, trade, counter terrorism cooperation, maritime research and energy partnership.

During the visit, the Bangladesh Prime Minister will hold bilateral discussions with Modi at 11.30 am on October 5.

She will call on President Ram Nath Kovind on the same day in the afternoon.

She will also meet Indian National Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on October 6 at 12 noon. This will be Hasina's first visit to India since the completion of the elections in Bangladesh and India, a press statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

The Prime Minister will leave Dhaka for Delhi at 8 am on Thursday by a Biman Bangladesh VVIP flight.

She will participate as the chief guest at the India Economic Summit organised by the World Economic Forum (WEF) on October 3 and 4.

On Friday, she will hold discussions with top business leaders in Delhi and will attend the inaugural session of the India-Bangladesh Business Forum.
