Advisers, secretaries to stay active in Dhaka

Economy won't get stagnant during long Eid vacation

Says Finance Adviser

FE REPORT | March 28, 2025 00:00:00

Economy won't get sluggish during a prolonged Eid-ul-Fitr vacation, Finance Adviser Dr Salehudding Ahmed said Thursday, as holidaymakers go on exodus from the capital for their native homes.

Friday marks the start of nine days of holidays for the public-sector employees, while majority of the private offices and industrial units will also remain shut during the period.

City-dwellers already get on an exodus from the sprawling capital city, Dhaka, and other cities and towns towards the countryside to meet their nearest and dearest ones to share joys of the religious festival.

Asked whether the prolonged closure will leave the country's economy stagnant, the finance adviser answered in the negative and said, "Everything will be remain operational."

He said most of the advisers of the interim government and secretaries of the administration would stay in Dhaka during the period and so they would act as and when necessary.

"We will also have meetings in zoom app, if required," Mr Ahmed told reporters after a meeting of the Advisers' Council Committee on Government Purchase (ACCGP) at Bangladesh Secretariat in the capital.

To a query as to whether the interim government has any plan to launch 100-day guaranteed-employment programme like a previous caretaker government, the finance adviser said he would look into the matter.

But he opines that employing people through regular projects will be better than the 100- day vocations.

On the day, the purchase body gave approval for procurement of two cargos of liquefied natural gas, 70,000 tonnes of fertilisers, and 50,000 tonnes of non-aromatic boiled rice.
