Extremism won't return to BD as youths are neutral

Dr Yunus tells The Economist

Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser for Bangladesh's Interim Government, has assured that Islamic extremism will not resurface in the country.

In an interview with The Economist on Friday, he addressed concerns raised by Indian and US officials about the potential resurgence of Islamic terrorism in Bangladesh.

"The youths here are neutral about religion," Yunus said, highlighting the progressive mindset of the younger generation.

The interview came after The Economist named Bangladesh its "Country of the Year," following the end of a 15-year dictatorship.

Dr. Yunus shared his thoughts on the nation's transformation and discussed the timeline for the next general election, which he indicated could take place by December 2025 or in the first half of 2026.

When asked about his plans post-election, Yunus reflected on his unexpected leadership role.

"I was forced into this job," he explained.

"I was enjoying my work in Paris when I was pulled away to take on this responsibility. Once my role is complete, I'll be happy to return to the work I've dedicated my life to-the party or movement I have built globally, which the young people also deeply support."

Addressing the risk of militancy in Bangladesh, Yunus firmly dismissed the notion. "I assure you that militancy will not rise in Bangladesh. The youth are neutral about religion. They want to build a new Bangladesh. These young people have the power to transform the world, not just our country."
