FBCCI, DCCI seek early solution to stalemate

FE Report | August 05, 2018 00:00:00

Business leaders urged on Saturday the government to resolve the ongoing stalemate, created over student protests, in the interest of the country's economy.

The Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) called on the agitating students to stop their protests for the sake of their academic activities and the country's economy.

It also observed that in the name of protests, a vested quarter was trying to incite them with an evil motive to destabilise the country.

"We can no longer accept such protests since the government has agreed to meet their demands," FBCCI President Md Shafiul Islam (Mohiuddin) told the FE.

"If such a situation continues, it will definitely affect the country's business activities and normal life," he added.

He said the government has accepted their (students) demands. "And they have to stop their agitation to see as to whether their demands are met by the government," he added.

President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) Abul Kasem Khan expressed the hope on Saturday that normalcy would return as early as possible for the betterment of the country.

He suggested that the government should fulfil the students' demands immediately.

There should have a roadmap for bringing discipline in the roads and transport sector, he added.

Student protests which entered its seventh consecutive day on Saturday halted normal business activities and brought the vehicular movement inside and outside the capital to a standstill.

The students started staging protests after two students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College were killed in a road accident in the city on July 29.

As a result, the people had to suffer a lot and the economy was bearing the brunt of such protests.
