Five people burnt to death as a fire wrecked a gas-lighter factory in Kadamtali Gol Chattar area of South Keraniganj in Dhaka on Saturday afternoon, police and witnesses said.
Five fire-fighting units rushed in and doused the blaze at the tin-shed factory house.
Initially, four bodies were recovered from the scene in the Kadamtali area, according to Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector of the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) headquarters media cell.
The death toll later rose to five, he added. The fire erupted at around 1:00pm at a tin-shed facility used for manufacturing gas lighters in Kadamtali Gol Chattar area of South Keraniganj.
On receiving the information, seven firefighting units rushed to the spot at about 1:16pm and managed to bring the blaze under control by 2:30pm, the official said.
Authorities could not immediately confirm the identities of the victims, while the extent of damage was still being assessed.
The cause of the fire remained unknown, as firefighters continued efforts to fully douse the flames and secure the area.
