Five of a family die as bus hits car at toll plaza on Mawa Expressway

MUNSHIGANJ, Dec 27 (UNB): Five members of a family were killed on Friday when their private car was fatally hit from behind by a speeding bus at Dhaleswari Toll Plaza on Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, Fire Service officials said.

The deceased - Sohan Mia, his wife Anamika Aktar, their son Emi, Anamika's mother Amena Begum, and her sister Annie Aktar - were all travelling to their village home in Gopalganj from Dhaka's Jurain by the private car that was waiting to pay toll.

Sohan was a private jobholder in Dhaka.

The accident also left four others injured and hospitalised. They were on a microbus and a motor cycle which were also standing at the toll plaza when the crash occurred. Sohan was a private jobholder in Dhaka.

Safiqul Islam, deputy assistant director of Munshiganj Fire Station, said a speeding bus of Bepari Paribahan crashed into the Mawa-bound private car from behind at the Toll Plaza in the morning, leaving the five dead on the spot.

The bus also rammed into a microbus and a motorbike and left four others injured, he said, adding that the traffic movement became normal after the accident-hit vehicles were removed from the Expressway.

The bus was seized but its driver managed to flee, he said.

At least seven people died and 30 sustained injuries in eight road accidents over the past six days on the Expressway.
