Flood situation worsens further

Floodwater inundates 30,000 hectares of standing crops

The flood situation in different districts of the country worsened further on Monday with spells of rainfall and onrush of water from upstream.

So far flood hit a total of 19 districts as water level rose further at 78 points of 61 rivers on the day.

Above 0.8 million people were stranded while floodwater inundated more than 30,000 hectares of standing crops, said officials.

Flooding in north, north-eastern, south-western, central and southern regions also caused immense sufferings to people and livestock, they said.

The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) in its evening updates on Monday said water level of 61 key rivers in the country increased at 78 points while it decreased only at 16 points.

Rivers were flowing above the danger mark at 22 points on the day.

It said the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma are likely to rise in next 48 hours starting from at 3:00 pm on Monday.

The flood situation in some lowlands adjacent to Brahmaputra and Jamuna rivers may slightly deteriorate in next 24 hours, it said.

While Surma-Kushiyara river systems were likely to fall after 24 hours, it added.

The Met Office in its forecast said rain might continue at north, north-eastern, south-western regions of the country and their adjacent regions of neighbouring India for next 48 hours.

Floodwater has inundated many places in Nilphamari, Lalmonirhat, Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Bogura, Sirajganj, Jamalpur, Mymensingh, Tangail, Rajbari, Sylhet, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar, Chattogram, Bandarban, and Cox's Bazar.

More than 0.8 million people have been marooned so far in the districts, said department of disaster management (DDM) sources.

Brahmaputra was flowing 1.08 metres above the danger mark in Kurigram, Ghaghot river in Gaibandha was flowing 68 centimetres above the danger level while Jamuna river in Jamalpur was flowing above 1.19 metres above the danger mark on the day.

More than 19 unions in Gaibandha were flooded on Monday newly, said Bangladesh Water Development Board, Gaibandha.

Water level of Teesta lessened on the day as it was flowing 28cm below the danger level in Nilphamari.

But more than 0.11 million people were still water-trapped at Dimla and Jaldhaka upazilas of the district, according to the DDM.

However, thousands of waterlogged people in Gaibandha, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram, Sunamganj, and Sylhet suffered a lot for shortage of food and fresh water.

Director of Field Service Wing under the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) Dr Md Abdul Muyeed said the ongoing flash flood inundated a total of 30,000 hectares of croplands of which 20,000 hectares are standing Aus paddy.

He said if water remains for next four or five days, it might cause severe damage to Aus paddy.

He said apart from Aus, seedbed of Aman paddy on 3,674 hectares, and vegetables on 4,850 hectares were inundated till Monday noon.
